'Big Chill' coming to Richland Chambers

Like most of the country cold, cold temperatures are here at Richland Chambers Lake.  I actually saw a boat trailer at the ramp at  FM 2859 late yesterday afternoon.  The temperature was already in the upper 30's and the wind was blowing pretty good so talk about a hearty soul!  It takes true adventuresome spirit to be out on the lake in this weather.  

So we all know to take the necessary precautions in freezing temps, right?  Cover the outdoor spigots, bring in or cover the tender vegetation and make sure you have plenty of firewood.
What other things do you need to know about Lake Life in the extreme temps?  On Richland Chambers a lot of people have lake-fed irrigation systems.  The pumps are usually located in the boathouse or on the shoreline, normally in an enclosure.  These systems are susceptible to the freezing temperatures.  They need to be drained prior to freezing weather.  Usually a drain plug or drain valve is located somewhere in the system.  Removing the plug or opening the valve is all that is necessary.  The system drains and you're set.

Also it is common for a boathouse to be equipped with fresh water for fish cleaning and things like that. The water supply should be cut off and the drain valve should be opened to drain this system as well to keep from having to make costly plumbing repairs.

Home Construction update on RCLake

The house is moving along nicely, slowly, but looking good. The framers have gone as far as they can with siding, trim and soffits and will be back next week to finish up with posts and beams. We are still waiting for the last window to arrive and when it does they will be finished pretty quick. The HVAC is roughed in, that is the air handlers have been set and all the ducts are in. The plumbers are working on 'top out' and my buddy Fred with Delta Electric is getting started wiring the house. The next thing will be to finish all he cedar and paint the gables and trim.

Richland Chambers is down like most Texas lakes right now so might as well get everything finished now so we can enjoy the lake when it comes back.

Lots of good deals on lots in The Shores right now, the water is falling and prices are too.

Launch at Oak Cove Marina on Richland Chambers Lake

Richland Chambers is almost 9.5 ft low as of today and the hot summer continues. Apart from the record low of 11.5 feet in 2006 this is the lowest the lake has ever been. There is still plenty of open water for boating out there and the place to put in is at Oak Cove Marina.

Oak Cove Marina on RC Lake is located right off of US 287 just before the bridge if your heading south east. Jerry and Roylene have taken advantage of the low water conditions to improve the boat ramp. They have done a lot of dredging, put down more rock and the ramp has 5 ft of water all the way out to the end of the cove today.

So yes you can launch your boat on Richland Chambers.

Time for little business!  This is a really cool restaurant / bar on the south side of Richland Chambers on FM 416.  This used to be the 'Draft House Grill and Bar".  The business at one time was moving along pretty well and it was a great hang out on Friday & Saturday nights.  Live music, good food and great atmosphere made for a fun evening on RC Lake.  The facilities are in great shape with all of the kitchen,  bar equipment and some sound equipment is in place.  The owners have moved on to other things and are wanting to sell.  This place is perfect for someone who wants to open a "Pub Style" operation, Sports bar, or just a good restaurant.

Like a twig on the shoulders of a mighty stream

Where has the blog gone?  Nothing is worse for a blog than inconsistency, right?  Well it has been many months since I have blogged and you can see in the picture where the house is as of yesterday 17Aug13.  Yes, some progress has been made though not what you would expect from supposedly a well thought out and planned building process.  

Building a house for yourself requires many things, perhaps the most influencing of which is motivation.

Many things have happened in our lives for Julie and I this spring, beginning about the time the blog dropped off.  So not wanting to sound as if I am complaining or offering up excuses, I won't.  Suffice it to say we have not been as motivated to make the change and move south down Chambers Creek about 12 miles or so.

The real estate market has been good and busy this year.  The lake is down 8 1/2 feet and we have moved our boat to a deep water slip in the marina at The Shores.  

We have been on the water quite a bit however not as much as last year.

Our motivation is returning with each new board nailed up and the goal is to move in around Christmas.

We'll see.

The Boathouse is finished!!   It has been for a while, I have been finding myself neglecting my blog.  The water under the boathouse is still about 3 feet and we can get the boat in.  Our seadoos are across the lake on a friends dock.  We plan on getting them when I can get the electricity hooked up to the boathouse temporarily.  We are going to take some chairs, fishing gear and possibly the chimenea down to the boathouse soon and see about catching some fish.

Richland Chambers Lake Spillway

This is a cool picture I took back in 2009 of the damn on Richland Chambers after some big rains in September and October, of all months.  The lake went from almost 5 feet low on September the 13th to more than a foot over by October 15th, rising more than a foot a week. 

Richland Chambers Lake Watershed

Most years,  Richland Chambers Lake fills in the late winter and spring so 2009 was not the norm, but it does demonstrate how fast the lake can fill.  The watershed for Richland Chambers covers 1957 square miles. It stretches into 6 counties eventuating in the confluence of Richland Creek and Chambers Creek (now in the middle of the lake).  Bardwell Reservoir is the headwaters of Chambers Creek and Navarro Mills Reservoir is the headwaters of Richland Creek.  Both are Army Corps of Engineers lakes and have 26 and 28 foot flood stages respectively.  One of the main functions of  Bardwell and Navarro Mills  is flood control. Water can be impounded and released into Richland Chambers all we need is a couple of good rains in the right spots!

Boat House construction 1.2

The boat house continues. Rchland Chambers Area Construction is proceeding very nicely. We had some rain, not enough, hope for more, which slowed everybody around at least a day. We are heading off to Las Vegas for the 40th annual RE/MAX International Convention. Yeah baby! The house building business is delayed for about 2 weeks due to me still redesigning the floor plan to fit on the lot and get us as close to the water as possible. While at the same time getting everything we want in this house. The shape of the lot has become a challenge when the wish list is pretty firm. I have to say we have pretty good water. The channel is more than 300 feet wide and the entire boathouse is only 90' out with more than 4 feet of water today. We are down about 4.25 feet today, check out the lake levels at.www.
